Greenfield, CALIFORNIA

May 15, 2008 - Raul Herrera, principal of Greenfield Elementary School, was arrested on suspicion of possession of cocaine.

A search warrant on his house had to be conducted by City staff wearing hazardous material safety gear because of the filthy conditions. Police confiscated a computer used by Herrera. They found two bags of cocaine in Herrera-Arteaga's right sock, Police later asked the district attorney's office to take on the investigation "because of its complicated nature."

The investigation began about three weeks ago, when Greenfield Union School District Superintendent called police to express about possible criminal activity. In March, Herrera was told he would be reassigned from principal to teacher. On April 15, he was placed on paid administrative leave and asked not to return to the school.

Neither the police nor prosecutors have said why Herrera is being investigated.

April 17 - Parents protest principal switch in Greenfield
- About 70 parents, residents and children protested along the 400 block of El Camino Real in Greenfield on Wednesday afternoon against Greenfield Union School District Superintendent Elida Garza's reassignment of Greenfield Elementary School Principal Raul Herrera.
- The State Board of Education listed Greenfield Union in March as the lowest performing district in California according to achievement standards required by the federal No Child Left Behind Act.
