A long-DELAYED JUSTICE case resolved. Willey sentenced to one to 15 years. It's not nearly long enough for a lifetime of abusing students with the help of school districts who would not stop him.
Dec 6, 2006 - Alan Roy Willey, 52, is scheduled for retrial on nine counts of aggravated sexual abuse of a child after a mistrial in which jurors deadlocked 4-4 on the charges dating back to the 1990s.
A new trial is set for May.
UPDATE June 7 - The jury is deliberating after closing arguments in the retrial. Of note, at the bottom: "He also taught at East Elementary in St. George in 1988-89, where criminal charges filed against him were dismissed."
CONVICTED June 7 - The jury found Willey guilty. He will be sentenced on July 16.
UPDATE - July 16 - The judge stayed (postponed) the sentencing of Willey while an evaluation is conducted at the Utah State Prison over the next three months.
SENTENCED Oct 15 - Willey was sentenced to one to 15 years in prison.
"Prison has been extremely difficult," Willey told Judge Clint Judkins. "I've done what you said to do. I've accepted what I did to [the victim] and I'm very sorry to him and his family. I want to say I'm sorry to the educational system."Willey will be listed on Utah's Sex Offender Registry.
The prosecutor wanted one to 15 years on each count.
"For some 30 years, this person has used a position of trust to abuse children. It seems from his behavior that Mr. Willey is a pedophile who entered into this profession because of access to children," [Prosecutor Tony] Baird said. "The state cannot recommend anything but a 30-year commitment. We want the [parole] board in a position to be able to hold him as long as they need to hold him to protect the community."The judge, however, ruled Willey serve his sentences concurrently.
[Judge Clint] Judkins said the parents and victims cry out for justice. He also noted school administrators had opportunities to stop the sexual abuse of several students who reported it in past decades.
"Throughout his career Mr. Willey was shuttled from one place to another place with glowing letters of recommendation," Judkins said. "There are others here who bear some responsibility. The school districts shuttled him off. The buck stops here."
