How dumb can you be to be caught in a Craiglist sex sting?

October 21, 2008 - 50-year-old Richard Kemper was arrested after responding to a posting on Craigslist. But the ad had been posted by undercover Polk County Sheriff's detectives.

Kemper, a teacher at Randall Middle School, traveled Friday night to a home in Winter Haven and offered the undercover officer $150 for sex. Kemper is charged with soliciting another to commit lewdness, prostitution and battery. The battery charges stem from him touching the undercover officer, according to the St. Petersburg Times. They report that he has been suspended. Other stories do not confirm this.

It does not say whether he was trying to solicit sex from a male or female officer.

He was among 13 people arrested in the Internet sex sting. A software developer, paint-store manager, citrus buyer, a 74-year-old retiree and truck driver, among others, were also arrested.

Ontario High School rates a 3 (with 10 highest) at GreatSchools.net
Based on poor academic performance.
The school has 780 students in grades 7-9

The school district rates a 2 at GreatSchools.net
The school population is 2810 in 7 schools.
Of the seven schools in the district, two rate 1 and none rate above 4.
For this poor performance, they spend $8,529 per student, which, oddly, is less than the $10,852 state average. (We say oddly, because 70% of the students in the district are eligible for a free or reduced-price lunch program, which is an indication of chronic poverty. In other states, the usual pattern is to see increased spending for such schools.)

Demographics of the district school population are 52% Hispanic and 43% White. The median household income in the city is $33,010, compared to a statewide average of $47,396. (The national average is $49,149.)

A pre-plea conference was scheduled for September 11. Garner’s plea hearing is set for September 19.

White Cloud, MICHIGAN

Police found a few computer parts in the bag. The witness took down the license plate, which belonged to Kowalski.

Sept 21, 2007 - Edward Kowalski, 51, a middle school teacher at White Cloud Junior High, was arraigned on felony charges involving an alleged Internet sexual solicitation of what he believed was a 15-year-old Adrian girl.
A preliminary examination on charges of accosting children for immoral purposes and using a computer to commit a crime was adjourned to Oct. 24. Kowalski was suspended from his teaching position before the start of the school year. The Internet solicitation was reported to have occurred on July 19.

PREVIOUSLY DISCIPLINED From The Grand Rapids Press: Several years ago, White Cloud Junior High teacher Edward Kowalski was disciplined after he accessed pornography and chat rooms on school computers, records showed. In a search of his home in July, Kowalski was described as "deceptive."

Kowalski, who lived alone, told police he did not have a computer or an account to access the chat service, and denied ever chatting with the 15-year-old, reports showed.

Police could not locate a computer, only a monitor on its side on the floor. But police found a newspaper article about Kowalski, in which he said he uses the Internet daily to buy Frisbees for his collection.

Police described Kowalski as "deceptive" during the search, and said he was "drenched in perspiration" as police worked, reports said.

Later, after Emrick left, he got a call from Mecosta County Central Dispatch.

Someone complained a trash bag was discarded on private property. Police found a few computer parts in the bag. The witness took down the license plate, which belonged to Kowalski, police reports showed.
Full Name: Edward Michael Kowalski

TRIAL DATE SET Jan 31, 2008 - Trial has been scheduled for Mar 18.

TRIAL April 23 - Attorneys were to give final arguments this morning before the case is turned over to the jury to decide. Kowalski's attorney said it didn't rise to criminal behavior.
Judge Harvey A. Koselka also questioned whether the evidence was enough to prove a crime was committed after Detective Vincent Emrick finished testifying about three Internet chats he had with Kowalski on July 19, 20 and 25.

Koselka later denied a defense motion to dismiss the case, ruling there was enough proof to send the case to the jury after a woman testified about a sexual relationship she had with Kowalski that started on the Internet.

Kowalski also apparently believed he was in trouble with the law when he allegedly trashed a home computer and was caught dumping parts of it along a rural road a few miles from his home after Adrian police came to search for it.
SENTENCED June 14 - Kowalski was sentenced to six months in jail - not prison - with credit for 51 days served, followed by five years of probation. Kowalski was ordered to register as a sex offender and to undergo counseling.

He was convicted by a jury April 23 of accosting children for immoral purposes and using the computer and Internet to commit a crime. “I heard the jury verdict and I thought they were correct,” the sentencing judge said.

MOTION FOR A NEW TRIAL July 15 - A hearing was rescheduled to provide more time for computer experts to testify. Judge Harvey A. Koselka ordered the hearing adjourned to Aug. 22 to provide adequate time. Monday’s hearing was scheduled for only 15 minutes.

MOTION DISMISSED August 23 - A motion for a new trial was rejected when defense attorneys were unable to prove their claims.

Morrison, IOWA

Sentenced to ten years.

Nov 24, 2006 -
Charles W. Christopher, 28, Challand Middle School (Illinois) physical education teacher, pleaded not guilty to 16 counts of indecent solicitation of a child - once count for every occasion he allegedly sought sex online.

Christopher used a school computer to chat with who he thought was a 13- and her 11-year-old friend. The "girls" actually was undercover police officer from Burlington, Iowa, who was conducting an Internet sting to catch child predators.

July 13 - A judge will hear arguments on the motion to drop on Aug. 13. Christopher, also a Sterling High School wrestling coach, was arrested in October and fired in December, after the school district conducted its own investigation. His trial is scheduled for Aug. 27.

HEARING SCHEDULED Sept 28 - Christopher has a change-of-plea hearing scheduled for Thursday (Oct 4? )in federal court in Davenport, Iowa. He has been in custody since April. His trial was to begin Oct. 9. He filed a motion to dismiss in July but a U.S. District judge denied the motion last month.

GUILTY PLEA Oct 4 - Christopher pleaded guilty today to trying to arrange sex with a Burlington girl he met on the Internet.

IN SUPPORT May 31, 2008 - Christopher will be sentenced on Monday. His attorney submitted 29 letters in advance of the sentencing to try to sway the judge's decision on how Christopher should be sentenced.

Most of the letters were from family and friends and a sex-addiction group that Christopher had been attending before his arrest. A relative revealed that Christopher had a sex addiction problem while he was growing up. His fiance wrote that she took away pornography from him and how he resorted to phone sex lines and ordering adult material online and that they attended counseling. Three co-workers, including two gym teachers, wrote letters of support for him.

TT - Did any of these people think it was important to notify the school that they had someone with a sex addiction problem working with middle school children? They knew he was in a sex addiction group and he and his fiance were in counseling. Did no one think that they should have notified the school? What the hell is the matter with people like that?

SENTENCED - June 2 - Christopher was sentenced to 10 years in prison.
--------------
As one poster put it at the news story: "Oh great, everything is now considered an "addict". So next time I get caught speeding, or not wearing my seatbelt, I should have everyone I know write letters to let them know I'm a "seatbeltless addict". ....Unreal"

Other posters aren't sympathetic to the "addict" excuse either.
