Massena, NEW YORK

Just go away. At taxpayer's expense.

June 18, 2008 - A 59-year-old special education teacher at J.W. Leary Junior High School who pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct related to the strip search in December of a student has agreed to retire from the Massena Central School District.

After being charged, Mr. Porter was suspended without pay. However, the Board of Education later changed his status to suspended with pay.

"The district stopped paying me from Feb. 6, 2007, to Jan. 28, 2008," he said. "They've been paying me since then and will continue until the end of the fiscal year." The district's fiscal year ends June 30.

Mr. Porter, in accepting retirement, was given a severance package, the details of which were unavailable.

"There was an agreement that was reached between Mr. Porter and the district that resulted in him deciding to retire," district Superintendent Douglas W. Huntley said.

However, Mr. Porter, who agreed not to release any package details, said he received "significant financial compensation."
The incident happened January 19, 2007.
