EARLIER STORIES:August 7, 2007 - An English teacher at Hopewell High School has been suspended, accused of a sexual relationship with a 16-year-old female student. The teacher had not been charged by police.

the student's father told police earlier this month that he had evidence of the relationship between his daughter and the teacher. He told authorities he recorded his daughter’s phone conversations with the teacher and found that the two were talking about their sexual relationship.

The search warrant also states that since the relationship began, the girl “has become withdrawn from the family and started cutting herself severely.”
The father found e-mail and taped the conversations.
In one conversation, the pair talked about having had sex the last time the teacher visited the teenager's home, the court documents say. In another, the student told the teacher her parents might help her through her financial troubles. The teacher responded that the parents would not give her money because of the relationship.

You cannot make this stuff up.

May 30, 2007 -Two teachers have been placed on paid leave while investigations continue into gun deliveries to the school.

School Superintendent Kaler said agents from the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) told him they believed guns were shipped to the school on more than one occasion.

[Police Chief Greg] Place described the firearms delivered to the school only as "long guns" and said they were packaged and new. He said that he had never heard of guns being delivered to a school, "not in my 20-some years of law enforcement here," but said his department and the ATF were investigating.

Largo, FLORIDA

Nov 14, 2006 - Described as "The offense [was so] brazen, so egregious that Pinellas School Board member Linda Lerner almost laughed as she read the account aloud."

Sharion Thurman, 56, Gibbs High School teacher "with a long history of work troubles" had falsified hundreds of student ballots in an attempt to get her niece elected homecoming queen in September. Despite a 20-year record includes numerous reprimands for poor judgment, insubordination, misconduct and disparaging remarks, she was given a 25-day unpaid suspension. Once the sponsor of the student council and junior class, Thurman has been removed from all school activities

The Tampa Tribune points to other questionable board discipline actions. But surely board member Linda Lerner's quote is a clue.

Mar 18 - Thurman is still certified to teach in Florida. Letter to the editor about the suspension and what it says about the Board of Education. Thurman got EducationWonks' Wanker of the Day Award.
