GUILTY PLEA & SENTENCING July 17 - Moments after a long-term substitute teacher pleaded no contest to leering at a 12-year-old boy in a middle school restroom, he proclaimed his innocence. Assistant State's Attorney Lindell K. Angel offered him the chance to change his mind and have his case go to trial. His lawyer said the statement was allocution.

The plea was allowed to stand. He was sentenced to a six-month jail suspended sentence and placed on five years of supervised probation.

Had the case gone to trial, sheriff's deputies would have testified Steel told them he would not trust himself to enter a boys bathroom, blaming bisexual tendencies for watching the child urinate Oct. 22 at Windsor Knolls Middle School, Assistant State's Attorney Lindell K. Angel said.
