SENTENCED Nov 1, 2007 - Calvin Staten, 44, Butler High School girls basketball coach, pleaded guilty to four misdemeanor counts of harassment. He was sentenced to the maximum of 90 days on each charge to run consecutively.
The judge suspended the one-year sentence and placed Staten on probation for two years. The prosecutors dropped felony charges of first-degree sexual abuse. Staten agreed to permanently relinquish his Alabama teaching license as part of an agreement resolving felony sexual abuse charges.
Staten has a case pending in Madison County on a charge of public lewdness.

Staten was indicted in April 2005 on charges of sexual abuse involving four Butler basketball players he coached in the 2003-04 season. His trial was held in September 2005 and ended in a mistrial when a jury reported it was deadlocked after deliberating three days."We couldn't take the risk of him being set totally free. This way he is not going to be able to teach again in any of Alabama's schools."
The young women testified that Staten had fondled them or made sexually inappropriate remarks to them.
A second trial was scheduled to start in Tuscaloosa on Monday.
Staten has a case pending in Madison County on a charge of public lewdness.
