June 19, 2008 - A judge has ordered Norman McMillan, 25, the gospel choir director at McCaskey High School, to stand trial on ten charges for a sexual involvement with a student that started when she was 15.
McMillan was arrested in May after a month-long investigation. According to investigators, he had a relationship with a girl two years ago, when she was just 15.
After his arrest, WHP21 learned that five months before he was hired in 2004 he pleaded guilty to simple assault and domestic violence charges for beating up his girlfriend.
The school district says it was aware of his record but the charges didn't disqualify him from being hired under state guidelines. McMillan is accused of having sex with the student nine times, two of the incidents allegedly took place at the high school, on North Reservoir Street, and the others at his home, a friend's home and inside a parked car.
McMillan's contract with the school district ran from March 2004 through September 2006, when school officials refused to renew it after being made aware of his alleged relationship with a student. The student contacted police on April 14, 2008 and told them about the relationship.
"We turned over the information we had to police in the fall of 2006 as soon as the central office administration knew about it," [district spokesperson Kelly] Burkholder said. She declined to say exactly how the district became aware of the alleged relationship.He is married and has two children.
City police Chief Keith Sadler, speaking at a Tuesday afternoon news conference, said the department's investigation started only last month, however.
McMillan's arrest marked the fourth time since 2006 that a local high school music instructor has been accused of having sexual encounters with teenage students.
TT - Maybe parents should be better judges of that if the District and the State gave the information before he was hired. Maybe the parents of this girl would have liked to have known.
