NOT GUILTY PLEA April 1, 2008 - Joseph Starkey, 25, a R.A. Long High School math teacher, pleaded not guilty to six counts of third-degree rape of a child and one count of furnishing liquor to a minor for having sex with a 15-year-old girl.

ARRESTED March 19 - Starkey was arrested in March following a tip that a runaway girl was at the teacher's apartment. He told police the 15-year-old girl at the center of the case was in his mathematics class at R.A. Long High School. A second man, Dennis Edward Baker, 38, was arrested for 16 counts of third-degree rape of a child and furnishing liquor to a minor for sex with the same girl.

Starkey resigned.

NOT GUILTY PLEA April 3 - Starkey pleaded not guilty. Trial is scheduled for May 28.

SENTENCED August 1 - Starkey was sentenced to 60 months in prison for three counts of third-degree rape of a child. The court dismissed an additional charge of third-degree rape of a child and a charge of furnishing liquor to a minor from March 12 to 15. [Baker is still awaiting trial.]
