March 25, 2008 - Jane Forgione, 62, a special education teacher at Carbondale Elementary School, was sentenced to 18 months' probation after pleading no contest to hitting her autistic students last year.
Teacher's aides working in the back of the classroom saw the incident and reported it to school officials. Forgione was also accused of biting an autistic student and pinching and twisting anothers' cheek.

Forgione received the 2006 Teacher of the Year award from the autism support group Parents Loving Children Through Autism.
