Some days when you read a news story you wonder about the intelligence and quality of the people who run and work in government schools.
Feb 12, 2008 - A mother is angry that her 6-year-old son was pulled out of the classroom for reading practice. He wasn't sent to the library, however. He was sent to read aloud to the custodian in the janitor's office. No one informed the mother that he was removed from class.
The assistant superintendent admits the mother should have been notified and that there were areas more appropriate. The teacher and principal likely picked up on the concept of having a student read aloud from their colleagues.
The mother pointed out that her son was the only one at McGalliard School to be pulled out of class and that when she talked to the custodian about the issue, he was aware of facts about her child's personal history that only a teacher or counselor would typically know.
"They had told him my son needed a male figure" because she and her husband were divorced, Mendez said. The custodian also "knew specific incidents that happened with my son last year. The only person that knows about (those incidents) are the guidance counselor and his teacher from last year."The assistant superintendent said that sharing personal information about the student with someone other than his teacher was "not something that we should subscribe to or even support, because those things are confidential."
