Marlborogh, MASSACHUSETTS

Feb 14, 2008 - Iliya Z Koptsovsky, 52, an algebra teacher at Advanced Math and Science Charter School, was arrested one count of assault with a dangerous weapon, one count of intimidating a witness, and one count of domestic assault and battery in connection with a Feb. 9 incident at his home. He was arraigned yesterday in Marlborough District Court.

He is accused of assaulting a 36-year-old woman who decided to sleep in her daughter's bed instead of Koptsovsky's bedroom. Koptsovsky yelled, insulted, then backed the victim up against a wall, causing an 11-by-14 inch picture frame to fall, police said. According to police statements, Koptsovsky took the picture frame and smashed it over the woman's head as her 8-year-old daughter looked on. The woman suffered lacerations above her right eye, according to court documents.

The 5-foot-8-inch, 188-pound Koptsovsky then prevented the woman from leaving her daughter's bedroom, holding the door shut, the documents state.

He also allowed an 80-pound dog to bite and scratch at her hips, leaving cuts on both sides of her pelvis, police said. He refused to call the dog off, according to court documents.

The woman then tried to leave the house, only to have Koptsovsky block her from exiting the garage in a car. She spent the night in the car parked in the garage with her daughter, police said.
Police learned of the assault when the 8-year-old told guidance counselor at her school about the incident, and the counselor notified the state Department of Social Services.

When Koptsovsky was arrested police seized four handguns in his house. He has permits to carry from Pennsylvania and Massachusetts.
