ARRESTED April 18, 2007 -
Matthew King, 26, a teacher at Gray's Creek High School, was arrested and charged with taking indecent liberties with a student.
He is accused of having a sexual relationship with a student who is reported to be age 18. King submitted his resignation Thursday afternoon.
GUILTY PLEA & SENTENCING (SORTA) April 8 - King pleaded guilty to felony crime against nature and misdemeanor solicitation for crime against nature for having a relationship with a student last year. The student did not cooperate with authorities.
Superior Court Judge E. Lynn Johnson indefinitely postponed final judgment on the felony. This means King is not being punished for it unless prosecutors choose to bring the case back to court. For the misdemeanor, Johnson gave King 18 months of probation, a $250 fine plus court costs and 24 hours of community service.Age of consent in North Carolina is 16. It’s a felony for a teacher and a student enrolled at the same school to engage in immoral, improper or indecent activities to cause or satisfy sexual arousal.
