How a Utah teen and her mother stopped a potential predator before he struck"

The title should be "groomed for sex." He failed because a parent persisted. It's a long story but several things stand out. First, if parents suspect their child is in contact with an adult who is behaving inappropriately, contact the Internet Crimes Against Children task force.

Secondly, there is - how an adult grooms and implicates a child in the crime.

In a document distributed by the U.S. Department of Education, author Sydney Robins describes the typical “grooming” process which resembles Heidi’s experience.

The potential abuser selects a student, gives the student attention and rewards, provides the student with support and understanding and, all the while, slowly increases the amount of touch or other sexual behavior.

Robins adds that grooming lets abusers test the student’s silence at each step. It also serves to implicate the student, resulting in children who believe they are responsible for their own abuse because they “never said ‘stop.’
