Feb 1, 2008 - In a Kingman Daily Mirror story about the financial problems in the Peach Springs Unified School District, there was this jarring note at the end of the story.
The Colorado City Unified School District is about halfway through a three-year period in receivership.--------------------------------
"One difference (between the two districts) is that three administrators in Colorado City had their certificates revoked the same day the State Board of Education got the receiver's report," [Mike File, Mohave County superintendent of schools] said. "I'm surprised that has not already been done in [former Peach Springs Superintendent Gene] Thomas' case."
TT - In a separate article at the newspaper, Report: Educator should be stripped of credentials, reports that stripping the former Peach Springs superintendent is one of the recommendations contained within the receiver's 120-Day Report and Financial Improvement plan for the District released last Friday by Veriti Consulting of Phoenix.
The report also recommends the State Board of Education consider other legal actions against Mr. Thomas and that members of the district governing board receive education and training on proper procedures for conducting meetings. The board has violated open meeting laws in the past, according to the report.
Total estimated debt for the district, excluding the $1.5 million for new construction, is $5,703,000. The district is in danger of becoming a transportation-only district. That means students would be bused to other districts to receive their education.
