Manassas, VIRGINIA

Ted Johnson, 48, an Osbourn High School teacher, was arrested, charged with one count of attempted custodial indecent liberties with a child and misdemeanor sexual battery.

Investigators say a 13-year-old Stafford County girl complained that Johnson had attempted to sexually assault her. She is described as a "non-family member."

Full Name: Ted Thomas Johnson
Stafford County Sheriff's Office Press Release (dated Feb 25, 2008)

The Stafford County Sheriff's Office is asking if there are any other victims of this type of assault by Mr. Johnson to contact the Sheriff's Office at 540-658-4450.

Feb 25 - The Free Lance-Star provides more details.

The victim, who was spending the night with Johnson's daughter, told police that Johnson tried to pull her underwear down as she was sleeping in a guest bedroom on the second floor, the affidavit states.

The girl said she woke up about 6 a.m. Feb. 18 and felt a hand on her left buttocks pulling on her underwear. She rolled over before the underwear came down and saw Johnson kneeling next to the bed.

The girl said she told Johnson to "go" in a firm voice, and he didn't move or say anything. She then ran to his daughter's room down the hall, the affidavit states.

The two girls went to Johnson's wife and told her what had happened. Johnson tried to talk to the girls, court records state, but the visiting girl refused to talk to him. The mother then drove her home.
NEW CHARGES Feb 29 - Two more girls have come forward with molestation allegations against Johnson.
Stafford Sheriff’s spokesman Bill Kennedy yesterday announced that Johnson is facing four additional charges involving two other girls.

Both girls claim they were molested at Johnson’s home. Kennedy said one girl was 12 when she was abused in June or July of last year: the other was 13 when the incident involving her happened in September.

The new charges against Johnson are two counts of aggravated sexual battery and two counts of taking indecent liberties with a child.
COURT DATE May 29 - Johnson was arraigned Wednesday. He is charged with aggravated sexual battery, two counts of attempted aggravated sexual battery, taking indecent liberties with a minor and two counts of attempted indecent liberties. A jury trial is scheduled for Oct. 15.

Midlothian, VIRGINIA

SENTENCED Dec 13, 2007 - Daniella H. Kyriakides, 54, a substitute ** art teacher at Clover Hill High School, was arrested and charged with embezzling money from a school's band booster club.

Police allege that Kyriakides stole about $4,900 from the booster club when she was the club's president and treasurer. Kyriakides has been released pending a court appearance in January.
The incident is still under investigation.

TT - the reason we cover these kinds of stories is because most often the only sentence handed out is probation with a promise to repay the money. That works out fine for the school district and the band club but it is hardly something you want to teach students.
** Substitute - from this article.

SENTENCED (Sorta) Sept 30, 2008 - Kyriakides entered an Alford plea of guilt to one count of embezzlement. She was sentenced to three years in prison -- all suspended. Kyriakides repaid the entire $4,900 sum soon after the club's new treasurer, who discovered the discrepancies.

Dinwiddie, VIRGINIA

How do you explain something like that to middle schoolers?

September 26, 2008 - Deborah Madison, 47, a Dinwiddie Middle School physical education teacher, will appear in court next month on a charge of possessing a residual amount of cocaine found in her car during a traffic stop.

She was arrested Sept. 16 after a Dinwiddie deputy sheriff found a smoking device in her car with a trace amount of cocaine. Among her duties at the school is to instruct students on the dangers of drugs, through a program called "Too Good for Drugs," officials said.

She has been suspended without pay pending the outcome of the case.

NO ENGLISH, PLEASE

Foretaste of the future?

September 1, 2008 - The kindergarten teacher has worked through the summer translating everything in sight to create an English-free zone for kindergartners.

No English (native-language tongue) will be allowed in the classroom once school starts. Science and math will be taught in Spanish. In other rooms, English will be the language. It's not a one-year thing. The intention is to last throughout a child's education, so this year's kindergartners will be taking some Spanish-only classes until they graduate high school.
-----------------------------------------------------
You might ask where. It's Richmond, Virginia. Where 84% of the students are black, 8% are Hispanic, and 7% are classified as white. Source: GreatSchools.net Students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch program = 67%

Posters at the article strongly disagree
.

I challenge this teaching method. I do not think this is a good idea on the scale at which it is being implemented.
AND,
I strongly disagree with this initiative. Give them the option in high school, but don't force it down their throats in kindergarten. We need to teach children (at all levels) how to be responsible, respectful of themselves and others. Educate them (in high school) how to balance a checkbook and use credit responsibly. Young people lack so many basic skills, but thats ok, because they are fluent in spanish. Lets get back to the basics before this country falls apart even more!
AND,
English is the official language of this country. Make foreign language an elective in higher education. Do not force spanish or any foreign language to anyone. Those foreigners should adjust to us, not us to' adjust to them. Your idea is full of bull. Be American or none at all. Cannonball.
AND,
This is wrong. Ban English for large periods of time in an American school? It speeds us on our way to being a bilingual nation. Every bilingual nation has problems: Canada, Belgium, even the Republic of Georgia. English unifies us. Let them learn Chinese, German, French, Arabic. As a "liberal" this disturbs me; the very fabric of the nation is being altered.
TT - To which we might add, it is also useful to create a Black/Hispanic voting block with no loyalty to our language, our customs, our history or our future.

South Riding, VIRGINIA

You can't get facts from the Washington Post. You get - scenarios.

August 21, 2008 - Ting-Yi Oei, 59, assistant principal at Freedom High School, was arrested on child pornography possession charges.

Making controversy out of nothing, his lawyer claimed they were not informed after the grand jury handed down the indictment against Oei on Aug. 11. "The timing raises questions. Why the public spectacle?" However, prosecutor Nicole Wittman said that Oei's attorneys had been informed of the indictment and told to be in court Aug. 12 but that they didn't show up.

"We just feel very strongly that this is not someone who should be in the Loudoun County school system," Wittman said.

What prompted his arrest was a March 14 incident, officials said where Oei allegedly had come to possess an "inappropriate" cellphone photo of a female student taken by another student, said Kraig Troxell, a sheriff's office spokesman.

Law enforcement officials were notified of the photo by a third party three weeks later, Troxell said. Oei allegedly did not inform the child's parents, law enforcement or child protective services of the photo, Troxell said, so officials charged him with failure to report suspicion of child abuse or neglect, a violation of state law. Oei was placed on administrative leave with pay.
That charge was dropped to be replaced with felony possession of child pornography.

"There's more to the story," Wittman said without elaborating. "If this was a matter of a photo that he possessed and maintained solely for the purpose of executing his job as vice principal, we would not be interested in prosecuting him. That is not the case."
------------------
TT - It's a time-honored method of journalists to pressure police to give them more information than is healthy for the case by threatening to "run with what we know." Whether that's true in this case or not, surely even the National Enquirer would drop a dime to the prosecutor's office and ask to look at, or be faxed, copies of notification papers that were sent to the attorneys.

GRAND JURY DISMISSED CHARGE

June 3, 2008 - Michele Auville, 35, a a first-grade teacher at Emerald Hill Elementary School, was arrested and charged with alleged possession of a schedule 1 or 2 drug May 31 after they pulled over a car she was riding in.

She was a passenger in a car that tried to elude police, according to the Culpeper County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies discovered that Auville had a smoking device with crack residue. The driver of the car fled on foot but was captured.
Full Name: Michele Lynne Auville

June 4 - Auville resigned on Monday.

June 11 - Auville’s case will return to General District Court July 17 at 9:30 a.m.

GRAND JURY DISMISSES CHARGE August 20 - A grand jury on Monday dismissed a felony drug charge against Auville.

The circumstances behind the grand jury’s decision will not be disclosed, as all testimony in such proceedings is secret. Court records, however, indicate that prosecutors were unable to definitively link the pipe to Auville.

According to a Certificate of Analysis from the Department of Forensic Science, Auville’s fingerprints were not found on the pipe, which police say was in her vicinity when she got out of the car. And based on a blood test, a separate report indicates that Auville did not have any illegal drugs in her system, A third report however, confirmed that the residue present in the pipe was cocaine.
During the July hearing, the judge rejected a motion from Auville’s defense attorney to strike the case. Smith had argued that because several people were in the vicinity of where the pipe was found, proving possession would be difficult.

A former Teacher of the Year pleads guilty to manslaughter for crash that killed her 6-year-old son. She had been using both alcohol and marijuana.

April 12, 2008 - Rebecca Whitehurst, a teacher at Meherrin Elementary School, pleaded guilty Thursday to involuntary vehicular manslaughter. Prosecutors agreed not to pursue charges of child neglect, failure to secure a minor in a vehicle and failure to wear a seat.

She had been found guilty of the DUI and restraint charges but was appealing both verdicts. A state toxicologist testified in November that test results indicated Whitehurst had been using both alcohol and marijuana sometime prior to the wreck.

She had been named Teacher of the Year for the 2005-2006 school year. Her son was a first-grade student at the school. She will be sentenced July 3.
Full Name: Rebecca Duncan Whitehurst

SENTENCED July 25 - Whitehurst was sentenced to seven years in jail - not prison -, with five suspended, in connection with the death of her 6-year-old son.

Her case prompted a re-evaluation by the Southampton County Board of Supervisors of its drug and alcohol policies. In February, supervisors agreed unanimously to adopt more stringent rules regarding drug testing and vehicle use.

At least two supervisors publicly chided the School Board for not following suit, suggesting that supervisors should "set an example" for the School Board by beefing up the county's policy. Currently the only School Board employees subject to random drug testing are those who hold commercial driver's licenses, such as bus drivers.
The judge also sentenced her to 12 months in jail on the DUI charge but suspended that sentence as well.

Salem, VIRGINIA

The original plea agreement called for three years probation, but Botetourt the judge increased it to five. After consulting with Yates, the defense attorney asked the judge to keep the agreement unchanged, but the judge refused, angrily telling Yates, "I was a former teacher."

Dec 17, 2007 -
Christopher Yates, 30, band director of Glenvar High School, was arrested, charged with taking indecent liberties with a female student.

His bond is set at $12,000, pending at hearing at Jan 22.

Roanoke County police say they're investigating an allegation against Yates there as well. It could result in additional charges. The events are alleged to have occurred from July 1st to October 4th of this year.
Full Name: Christopher Matthew Yates
Nickname: Matt Yates

INDEFINITE LEAVE Dec 18 - According to the school administration, Yates has been put on "indefinite leave." Sheriff Ronnie Sprinkle confirmed for News-7 the alleged victim in this case actually lived with Yates and his wife. Yates is due back in court on January 22.

PLEA AGREEMENT April 17, 2008 - WBDJ 7 is reporting that

The Commonwealth's Attorney has reached an agreement with the former teacher so that he will plead guilty to a felony in July.

The Troutville resident will be sentenced to three years, but will only serve six months under the agreement. Once Yates gets out, he will be on probation and have to register as a sex offender.

GUILTY PLEA & SENTENCING (sorta) July 25 - Yates pleated guilty to a felony count of taking indecent liberties with a minor. He was sentenced to three years in prison with all but six months suspended, and five years of supervised probation after his release. Yates will also have to register as a sex offender.
Summarizing the evidence against Yates, Assistant Botetourt Commonwealth's Attorney Hilary Griffith said the girl had been abandoned by her parents and was living with her sister in Salem, but her sister threw her out.

Yates and his wife took her into their home and obtained legal custody of her. At first, Yates and the girl had a relationship like that of a father and daughter, but the relationship turned sexual after she moved in with him.
The original plea agreement called for three years probation, but Botetourt Circuit Court Judge Malfourd "Bo" Trumbo increased it to five. After consulting with Yates, the defense attorney asked the judge to keep the agreement unchanged, but the judge refused, angrily telling Yates, "I was a former teacher.

After a brief break in the hearing, Yates agreed to the new terms.

Yates was briefly granted a furlough when his wife gave birth in July.

OurValley.org: (July 24) - Former Glenvar band director sentenced for having sex with student
“I want to publicly apologize. I’ve spoken to some of my close friends, and have gained their forgiveness, but I haven’t been able to speak to the Glenvar community…or to my band students. I’m very sorry,” Yates said to the group of friends, Glenvar Band Boosters and other supporters in the courtroom. His wife and newborn baby were among them.
Although the Virginia sentencing guidelines did not call for any jail sentence, Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney Hilary Griffith said she asked for jail time since Yates was acting as a substitute parent for the girl.

TT - We'll take flak for this, but...
There's seems to be a pathological moral deficiency in many band boosters. We aren't sure if this is because band directors become surrogate parents for their children and the adults are in full denial of the harm done by the band instructor. Or if they really are rah rah nitwits completely lacking in a moral compass and a lack of social responsibility.

But there's something unwholesome about such support long after it becomes apparent that the band director or band teacher is flagrantly guilty of sexual abuse of someone entrusted to his care.

We've frequently seen demonstrations of the same moral vacuity in supporters when the teacher is a drama instructor.

Canadian investigators find child pornography on his computer.

July 23, 2008 - Richard Doucet, 37, a private school teacher in Montreal, was arrested in May at a hotel in Virginia on allegations he had used an Internet chat room to attempt to lure a minor for sex. After his arrest, police in Montreal carried out a search warrant on Doucet's home on a request from investigators in Virginia and found child pornography.

[The] investigators found a video containing child pornography and about 100 photos depicting children being sexually abused. The head of the sexual assault squad said investigators do not know how the child pornography was obtained, but are still trying to determine its origins.
TT - Amazingly, the Canadian officials are holding off charging him for the child pornography because they are waiting to see what happens in the United States because the internet luring charges in the U.S. are "more serious charges." Go figure.

May 13 - Montreal school copes with news of teacher's arrest
Doucet had been at a teachers' conference in Atlanta but made a side trip to Fredericksburg, Va., where he was arrested. He was charged with attempted indecent liberties, use of an electronic communications device to solicit a juvenile, and two counts of distribution of child pornography.

NEW CHARGES September 5 - Doucet has been charged with more than 200 new counts related to child pornography. The new accusations stem from images found on a compact disc that was seized by police from a motel room.
Det. John Chapman of Dumfries, Va., police said the 36-year-old has been indicted on 230 counts of possessing and reproducing child pornography.

Chapman said each felony carries a five-year mandatory prison sentence, which means Doucet could be sentenced to more than 1,000 years in jail if convicted on all counts.
"Down here in Virginia they take that very seriously," Chapman told The Canadian Press on Friday.

"Virginians are conservative people and they want to protect their kids. It's all about putting these guys away."
Police do not expect more charges.

What is with female teachers who threaten to bomb little children? Why women and no men? This is the fifth teacher arrested for threating the lives of elementary or middle school children.

May 22, 2008 - Heidi Dorn, 34, a speech pathologist in the special education department at Shelburne Middle School, was arrested on charges she made bomb threats at the school.

Dorn is accused of leaving five threatening notes, some typed and some handwritten, at different locations in the school Feb. 21, 22 and 25, said Staunton Police Officer Aaron D. McFarlane, Shelburne’s school resource officer. Dorn faces three felony charges of threatening to bomb and four felony charges of threatening to do bodily injury. She reportedly found one of the notes herself in a staff bathroom in the school’s eighth-grade hall.

The wording of the threatening notes raised suspicions about the age of the author. The notes "threatened to shoot people and bomb the school." Dorn had already resigned from her position at Shelburne to take a job at a different school, he said. May 30 was scheduled to be her final day. A psych evaluation has been ordered.
