The investigation took a year. Cardiel's son said he found the items when his father asked him to fix a problem on the computer and had the files minimized.
A poster at the Dec 13 news story wondered what took investigators and prosecutors a year to file charges. It isn't incompetence but thoroughness.
Whenever child pornography is found investigators compare the images to a national databases of known pornography to try to identify the victims if they can. This also helps them track back to what they hope is the source of the image. In addition, they want to know if any of the images are of local children and if the perpetrator was, himself, trading images.
It's a time-consuming process.
Cardiel was arrested and will be tried in Sheboygan.
PLEA HEARING SCHEDULED for April 24, 2008.
