Apr 3, 2007 - INDICTED:
David Jones, 47, a science teacher at Phillips Middle School (and a Boy Scout troop leader) was indicted last week by a federal grand jury on charges of child pornography and trying to engage in sexual activity with a minor.

He was arrested in August as he walked to the home of a 15-year-old boy he communicated with on the Internet. A sheriff's investigator set up the meeting online after the boys' parents contacted law enforcement. Jones arrived at the house with condoms, a digital camera and personal lubricant, court records show. He faces 22 charges state charges stemming from two incidents with underage boys.

Jones was accused of taking indecent liberties with a minor for an alleged incident involving another teenage boy in Wake County last April, according to court documents. Investigators found more than 30,000 images of children as young as 5 years old on Jones' computers that had been downloaded over the past six years, according to arrest warrants.

ARRAIGNMENT AND NOT GUILTY PLEA: Apr 5 - Jones, 47, was released to the custody of his mother without having to post bond. At his arraignment, he pleaded not guilty. He is under house arrest. He is required to wear ankle bracelet that will alert authorities if he strays away from the telephone.

FEDERAL CHARGES: Although the Orange County Sheriff's Office originally charged Jones, federal authorities recently took over the case. The Orange-Chatham District Attorney has said he would dismiss the local charges against Jones once the former coach was charged by federal authorities.

He will be in court again May 14.

GUILTY PLEA May 9 - Jones pleaded guilty in federal district court in Greensboro today to enticement of a minor, a felony with a mandatory minimum prison sentence of 10 years, according to Assistant U.S. Attorney Mike DeFranco.
Sentencing is scheduled for August 29.

No date given for prosecution of the pornography charges.
