Rochester, NEW YORK

June 7, 2007 - Business teacher Lynn Taliento, 43, was arrested as school got out yesterday at the Ninth Grade Academy. She is accused of stealing more than $750,000 from two elderly women.

Taliento will be arraigned on the grand larceny charge today.

UPDATE: Taliento pleaded not guilty. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for June 12.

WARNING TO PARENTS: The school district posted an alert on its website (upper right) urging parents to check the credit histories of students who have taken classes from Lynn Taliento. She may have solicited social security numbers from students. News story.

UPDATE June 20 - Taliento's case will be going to a grand jury.

UPDATE August 17- Taliento's husband has been arrested. He was arrested in 2001 for stealing the social security number of his own child to open a credit card account. He pled guilty to forgery in that case.

ARRAIGNED and INDICTED: August 22 - Indictments were unsealed in court. Both Talientos were arraigned and pleaded not guilty.

CASE ADJOURNED: August 31, 2007 - A judge has adjourned the case until until Sept. 28.

EVIDENCE CHALLENGED Jan 4, 2008 - A Judge will hold a hearing on Feb 7 that will examine admissions made by Lynn Taliento, including tape recordings investigators secretly made at a meeting in the woman’s home. The defense is challenging whether the 72-year-old victim acted as an agent of the police and caused his client to make statements involuntarily, making the recording inadmissible at the trial.

TRIAL SCHEDULED - July 28 - A trial date of Nov 24 has been scheduled. Both Talientos are out of jail on bail and their attorneys are trying to get them tried separately.
