Moral Character Complaints

June 20, 2007- From the New York Times: "Between Teacher and Student: The Suspicions Are Growing" What seems to be growing is a public consciousness of improper sexual relations between teachers and students.

New York State has reported a marked increase in a broader but similar category, what are called moral-fitness cases, involving certified teachers and administrators.

A recent State Education Department study said that the number of those cases has almost tripled in recent years, and that the clear majority of complaints were sex-related.
The Times reports that moral character complaint cases have increased from 36 in the 2000-1 school year,to 104 cases in the 2005-6 school year. They also report that "more than two-thirds of the cases involved sex-related issues, including possession of child pornography, lewdness, inappropriate relationships with students and sex crimes."

Read the whole thing before they put it in their paid archives.

TT- What the paper doesn't investigate is A) How many cases resulted in revocation of a teacher or administrator's license? B) How many cases resulted in voluntary surrender of a license? C) How many cases were dismissed altogether?

If a license was revoked, could the teacher or administrator re-apply in the future?
