May 30, 2007 - Because a volunteer coach who worked in the Gloucester girls youth softball league this season was found to be a convicted sex offender, the league will now mandate criminal background checks of coaches and volunteers. We found him within 24 hours of being notified, and before anyone got together again the problem was taken care of. It was a nice tip to get, and everybody did what they’re supposed to do. The problem was removed from the field," saidLouis McGrath, Cape Ann Girls Softball League's commissioner. The volunteer, Robert Marshall Jr., 38, was convicted of rape and abuse of a child in 1988 and must register with the Gloucester Police Department as a sex offender, according to police. He was also charged with, and acquitted of, assault with intent to rape in 1992. He failed to register will police as a sex offender.
Marshall pleaded guilty in Gloucester District Court to failing to register. He was sentenced to eight months of probation.
