NEW CHARGES: August 4 - The state attorney's office has filed new charges against a former Jackson Middle teacher accused of having sex with a 16-year-old student. The charges are one count of sexual battery on a child by a familial or custodial authority and attempted sexual battery on a child by a familial or custodial authority. They are 1st and 2nd degree felonies.
The state charges, which replace those Titusville police filed in April, are more serious and take into account Hughes' position as a teacher, Assistant State Attorney Julia Lynch said.Brevard Public Schools fired Hughes May 8 for violating the teachers code of conduct and forwarded the case to the Florida Department of Education.
RECORDING: August 16 - Hughes and the victim tried to coordinate their stories, according to Local 6 News. The conversation between Hughes and the boy were recorded as they sat in the back of the patrol car the night she was arrested.
The seven-page transcript of the conversation was among investigative documents released by the State Attorney's Office to Local 6 News partner Florida Today. Those documents became public record after being requested by attorneys for Hughes, who faces one count of sexual battery on a child by a familial or custodial authority and attempted sexual battery on a child by a familial or custodial authority.A court date is scheduled for September 10.
