Feb 16, 2007 - Derek Baird, 19, a special education assistant at South Laurel High School, was arrested and charged with possession of matter portraying sexual performance by a minor.
Another teacher heard rumors and when confronted, Baird admitted that he had a relationship with the 16-year-old girl. Police found pictures of Baird and the girl on his cell phone, presumably having sex.
Baird resigned. The story doesn't say if she was a student in one of his classes. Police said that in Kentucky, sex with a 16 year old isn't illegal but taking sexual pictures of anyone under 18, is. Bard is being held on $50,000 cash bond.
UPDATE Feb 20 - Baird was sentenced to 90 days. In the plea agreement, the charge was amended down to a misdemeanor.
